Eindhoven Marathon 2009

The 26th Marathon Eindhoven was won by Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai in 2.07.01, a new course record.
Second and third were Philip Sanga and Josph Ngery in 2.08.07 and 2.08.10, both from Kenya.

Initially it appeared that the course record of 2.07.49 would not be broken. At 35 km a group of nine runners where on a schedule of 2.08.30. When the pacemakers stepped out the group fell apart and Mutai and Sanga acceleared. Soon after that an explosion followed by Mutai. Between 35 and 40 km a split time of 14.14 was recorded! The last 2.2 kilometers Mutai ran in 6.04, an incredible final sprint to a marathon.

The womens race was won by Beate Naigambo from Namibia in 2.31.01. Lydia Kurgat, last years winner, came in second in 2.31.26.

The Benelux Open Championship was a Belgian championship with the numbers one, two, three. Hans Janssen won and improved himself to 2.15.26 (16e). Eric Gerome finished in 2.19.40 (21e) and Guy Fays ran 2.20.59 (24e).

The weather conditions were good during the marathon: cloudy but dry, temperature 13 degrees but with some pesky wind. In total there were over 17,000 participants over 4 distances. Videos of Eindhoven Marathon 2009
