Unknown Kenyan smashes the course record in Frankfurt, Germany
This was not only his debut marathon, it was also his first trip outside Kenya. Before this marathon Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot was completely unknown. Not anymore now!Cheruiyot was such a late entry to this Marathon, that he had to buy his own air ticket. If he would breake 2:14:00 he would get his money back. Well, that's not only the case now, he also collects 50,000 euros for beating the course record! He clocked 2:07:21, more than a half minut faster than the course record: 2:07:58.
The German Sabrina Mockenhaupt, who clocked a personal best 2:26:22 won the women’s race. Mockenhaupt went straight into the lead, and was never headed.
